We have been working hard on a few new features, and thought we’d let you know what we are working on! In the last few weeks we were asked a few times if there was a way for us to check if a phone number is a mobile phone number or not and we are now adding a feature to lookup the carrier and phone number type for a phone number.
Currently this will only works for numbers on the North American Dial and keep in mind that the information is not 100% accurate as due to the Number Portability Act numbers originally allocated as mobile numbers can become land lines and vice versa.
You will see this feature added to the service in the next few weeks it will be available free of charge as a lookup service within SendShorty and can also be used for bulk lookups through an API for only 1 cent per lookup!
At SendShorty we listen to our users and we keep working on adding new Features to the service that you are asking for. Recent popular requests included birthday reminders and event reminders, and we are now working on implementing these for you.
The first version of the birthday reminders was implemented in the the May 5th release and we expect to complete an integration with EventBrite for event reminders in an upcoming release, so check back soon!
We are working hard on adding additional features to SendShorty so that Empire Avenue users can use SendShorty to send SMS Text Messages to their friends on Empire Avenue and buy and sell stocks using SMS Text Messages.

While hundreds of companies were impacted this morning by the outage in the Amazon AWS cloud SendShorty was not impacted at all. Granted our users were not able to post to FourSquare because the FourSquare service itself was not working but that wasn’t something we could do anything about.
It is amazing to see how fast cloud services have grown over the last few years, hundreds of startups rely on Amazon’s cloud services for their day to day operations and when Amazon’s east coast data center started having issues, this morning, a very significant number of these startups also started experiencing issues. It begs the question if the people responsible for the architecture and design at the impacted companies thought the architecture and design through or if they just choose the cheapest solution they could find! (and it wasn’t only startups impacted by this outage)
At SendShorty we don’t just rely on one server or one cluster of servers in one data center. Our service is build on a geographic redundant clusters of servers, dedicated hardware that is up to the task! It limits us slightly in our ability to scale up our service although we could quickly build additional clusters in the cloud if needed, we just wouldn’t rely on one cloud services site!
This doesn’t mean we never experience issues, we have had hardware malfunction and even whole data center sites go down or loose connectivity. We carefully monitor all our hardware, the services running on them and our connectivity and quickly take action in case of failures but we won’t be impacted at the scale some of companies were impacted today!

Working hard to day on more integrations, cutting it short but we are getting there, good progress!!!
Tomorrow will be an interesting day at SendShorty. We’ll have to come up with the list of features that will make it into the Beta and the ones that will have to wait until the next release. Good thing is that we will have 2 week release cycles so anything missing will be added quickly!
